Roy Miller Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week During Texas Longhorns Career
Roy Miller’s football career at the University of Texas included memorable performances, team success, and recognition as one of the top defensive linemen in the Big 12.
During his senior season with the Texas Longhorns, Miller was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week following Texas’ 38-14 road victory over Colorado.
The performance highlighted the impact Miller made from the defensive tackle position and his role in one of the nation’s strongest defenses.
Big Performance Against Colorado
Against Colorado, Roy Miller recorded a season-high eight tackles, including a tackle for loss, while also adding three quarterback pressures, two pass breakups, and a fumble recovery.
The fumble recovery came during the third quarter and gave the Texas offense the ball at the Colorado 18-yard line. Texas converted the turnover into a touchdown to extend its lead to 28-0.
Texas ultimately won the game 38-14.
Miller’s performance earned him the first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of his college career.
Helping Lead One of College Football’s Top Defenses
Miller’s impact went beyond individual statistics.
At the time of the Colorado victory, the Texas defense ranked third nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 51.8 rushing yards per game. The Longhorns also ranked first in the Big 12 in rushing defense.
Texas was allowing only 11.4 points per game and had not surrendered a rushing touchdown through that point of the 2008 season.
Playing defensive tackle requires more than statistics. Interior defensive linemen are often responsible for controlling blockers, disrupting running lanes, collapsing the pocket, and creating opportunities for teammates.
Miller became known for his strength at the point of attack.
During his Texas career, his reported strength numbers included a 500-pound bench press, 690-pound squat, and 350-pound power clean.
Roy Miller’s Texas Longhorns Career
By the time he received the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor, Miller had appeared in 41 games for the Longhorns.
His career numbers at that point included:
- 109 tackles
- 52 solo tackles
- 17 tackles for loss
- 4.5 sacks
- 29 quarterback pressures
- Four pass breakups
- One fumble recovery
Those numbers reflected the consistency and physical style that helped establish Miller as a key contributor on the Texas defensive line.
He was also included on the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award, which recognizes the nation’s top defensive player.
From Texas Football to the Next Level
Playing football at the University of Texas provided Miller with the opportunity to compete on one of college football’s biggest stages.
The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week recognition remains one of many moments from a career built around preparation, strength, discipline, and competing at the highest level.
For Miller, the accomplishments at Texas represent more than statistics or awards. They are part of a larger football journey and a reminder of the work required to succeed as a student-athlete and defensive lineman.
The Texas Longhorns have a long history of producing NFL talent, and Miller’s time in Austin helped prepare him for the next chapter of his football career.
